Congrats. If you are reading this post you’ve officially survived Trump’s first 100 days back in the White House. Feels like 100 years, right? Scientists say time is relative. Erich Fromm would say time under authoritarianism just feels longer because it slowly crushes your soul.

And boy, would Fromm have a field day with this moment.
In his 1941 classic Escape from Freedom, Fromm diagnosed exactly what’s going on in Trump’s America. He warned that when freedom becomes too overwhelming—when people feel anxious, isolated, and powerless—they’ll run straight into the arms of a strongman like Adolph Hitler. A big daddy who promised to make things simple. Safe. “Great” again. Sound familiar?
Fromm didn’t need a crystal ball—he had Nazi Germany in front of him. But his words ring eerily true today, especially with Trump’s latest executive order (Newsweek link), which expands law enforcement’s access to military equipment. Critics (and anyone paying attention) are calling it a move toward martial law. Fromm would call it textbook authoritarianism—complete with the fantasy that a Supreme Leader will fix your life if you just give up your pesky individuality.
And why now, on Day 100? Because Trump’s poll numbers are sagging harder than his face after an Adderall crash. Fear is rising, accountability is knocking, and in true Frommian fashion, the authoritarian response is to tighten the grip, not loosen it. Clamp down. Blame others. Drown the noise of the 250,000 rally goers attending the Bernia/AOC Stop the Oligarchy tours, the million of Hands Off My Democracy rallies with the sirens of militarized tyranny.
But here’s the punchline Fromm would appreciate most: authoritarianism is never really about strength. It’s about fear. The fear of freedom, of responsibility, of thinking for yourself. And what could be more fragile than a man who needs tanks in the streets on his birthday to feel in control?
So, as Trump marks 100 days of chaos, let’s remember what Fromm tried to teach us: real freedom isn’t easy, but surrendering it is the first step toward something much, much worse.
